Greetings Weston,

Here is an update on PFAS remediation efforts:

PFAS Remediation Efforts are Complete -Click here to read the Project Completion Letter from State of CT Department of Public Health

As previously communicated, the Town of Weston detected PFAS in the School/Town Drinking Water System.  A permanent PFAS remediation system approved by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health was installed over the summer.  As a result, the PFAS has been reduced to non-detectable levels in the drinking water.  School staff, town staff, and the town's system operator will be working together over the next few days to flush out the system so that everyone can drink the water on the first day of school.

GREETINGS WESTON,

Here is an update on PFAS remediation efforts:

As detailed in our previous announcements, the Town of Weston has detected PFAS in the School/Town Drinking Water System. The PFAS levels detected are within allowable legal limits. However, out of an abundance of caution, the schools and town offices have been using bottled drinking water until a permanent PFAS remediation system could be successfully installed.

Below is a status update:

  1. A prototype remediation system installed in April by the Town’s Certified Operator dramatically reduced PFAS levels to non-detectable levels in the drinking water.
  2. The Town’s Certified Operator submitted a design for a permanent remediation system to the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) for its review and approval.
  3. This week, the CT DPH approved the Certified Operator’s design for a permanent remediation system, and equipment associated with the permanent system was ordered.

The permanent remediation system will be installed and producing water in time for the fall school session. We are so grateful to the CT Department of Public Health for working hand-in-hand with the Town of Weston throughout this process. I would also like to thank our teams at the Weston Public Schools, Superintendent Wolak, Town Administrator Jonathan Luiz, and Aspetuck Health District for their support.

Greetings Weston,

I am writing to share information regarding the water in our schools and town buildings. Please link below to an important message from the Town of Weston, Weston Public Schools and Aspetuck Health District which provides a detailed explanation of the situation. Here is a brief summary:

1) Recent and extensive water testing reveals that the drinking water provided to the Weston Public School (WPS) buildings and the Weston Town office buildings meets current federal and current state standards.

2) The water testing also reveals the existence of low levels of per-and polyfluoroakyl substances (PFAS). Out of an abundance of caution, The Town of Weston and The Weston Public Schools are taking precautionary measures against PFAS.

3) As of Thursday, March 17th all water fountains including water bottle filling stations will be turned off in our schools.  Every school will provide bottled water to students and staff while this issue is addressed. All district cafeteria staff will use bottled water when cooking lunch. Appropriate signage will be posted in our schools and district offices to reinforce these new procedures. School administrators will oversee the distribution of water in each building. All municipal buildings will be providing bottled drinking water as well.

4) A public informational meeting on the subject of PFAS, remediation efforts, and precautionary measures against PFAS will be hosted on Zoom by Town and School Officials on March 28, 2022 at 7 pm.  Details about the meeting are in the attached letter.

The health and safety of our town is of utmost importance. We continue to work with School Superintendent Lisa Wolak, Weston Public Schools, the Connecticut Department of Public Health and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Aspetuck Health District on this issue and will update you as more information becomes available.

With Gratitude,
Samantha Nestor
