Weston Compost Info Session

February 28, 2024 - 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Lachat Town Farm has partnered with Sustainable Weston on a variety of initiatives and events and is proud to support the town’s sustainability programs including the NEW food scrap recycling program launching March 2nd at the Transfer Station.

Please join us on Wednesday, February 28 at 7PM for a Community Meeting where the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA), Weston Department of Public Works and Sustainable Weston will explain the program, review the guidelines and answer any questions. Doors will open at 6:30PM for refreshments and mingling.

Starting Saturday, March 2, residents can begin depositing acceptable food scraps at the designated collection bins located at the Weston Transfer Station during regular business hours. The bins will be located next to the Redeemables and Glass Recycling stations. There is no cost to residents. A Vehicle Permit Sticker is required to enter the Transfer Station and is free to residents with the motor vehicle tax bills.

Residents will also have the opportunity to purchase a starter kit at the meeting. Starter kits will cost $20, and include a 1.5-gallon counter collection bin, a roll of 25 BioBag BPI-certified compostable liners for the bins, and a larger six-gallon bucket that locks for transporting food scraps. The first 100 residents who sign up for the program will get a free start kit. Purchase or use of the starter kit is not mandatory to participate in the program.

Fun fact: Lachat Town Farm has recently implemented a food scrap recycling program for its kitchen programs and farm events, thanks to our sponsor, Action Waste Solutions. Lachat Town Farm has also set up an onsite composting facility for the property’s organic waste from the gardens and animals.
