People all across the country will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day this January 16th in various ways. One popular way to commemorate King's life and work is by participating in a day of service and reflecting on the messages he spread throughout his life. Our 4th Annual MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for our community to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service and volunteerism.
For this year's service project, we will be working with local charity Person to Person (P2P) to stuff grocery bags full of necessary breakfast foods. Breakfast is one of the most important meals but often one that is skipped by those facing food insecurities. In the barn, you will be walking through an assembly line putting together much needed foods like cereal, peanut butter, pancake mix, maple syrup, box of granola/breakfast bars, bag of apples/oranges or bananas, bread, eggs, and organic whole milk. P2P currently serves approximately 28,000 individuals in lower Fairfield County, including the towns of Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport, and Wilton. The cost of sponsoring this package is $20 per bag and requires registration below. You can register for as many bags as you are interested in filling or donating. We would also greatly appreciate donations to fill bags if you are unable to attend. In the comment section, please let us know if you will NOT be attending. You can also drop off any of the above items on the porch of the Farm House anytime before January 11th and donations are much appreciated, even if you can not attend.
While visiting the farm to participate in our service project, we invite you and your family to further honor Dr. King by enjoying a free StoryWalk®, featuring the children's story, Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. StoryWalk® is a fun, educational activity where the story unfolds along a series of stations placed along the farm and is wonderful for all ages.
All throughout the day, we will also be playing the "I Have a Dream" speech and will have a craft that will help all attendees reflect on the day and the message. Lachat Town Farm believes in planting the seeds of philanthropy at a young age. We invite all ages that are off from school or work to take an hour to serve your community.
