Saturday April 24 is GREEN UP DAY! Help keep Weston GREEN and CLEAN. Pick up a lawn bag, choose an area, and help make Weston more beautiful.
Join Weston Kiwanis as they first present the Millie Best Environmental Award before they kick off their annual Green Up Day event. The presentation takes place on Saturday, April 24 at 9:30AM via Zoom during the Kiwanis meeting (westonkiwanis.org). This year’s recipient is Bill McKinney, organizer of several past Greenup Day events and our town’s expert on invasive plant species. The Millie Best Environmental Award was started in 2005 in honor of Millie Best, a Weston resident who started Green Up Day in the early 1970s to encourage volunteers to come out to clean up litter along Weston roads. Her efforts through the years engaged thousands of volunteers in the annual clean up on the last weekend in April.
Following the presentation (starting at 10am) come over to the entrance of Norfield Church Parrish Hall to pick up not only your lawn bags, but our town tree warden, Tom Faila, will be distributing approximately 100 white lilacs and 100 Kousa Dogwoods to participants. These trees have been donated by Eversource and delivered by our Regional Arborist Eric Barber. Planting instructions will be provided for each tree or shrub. Saplings are first come first served between from 10 AM until Noon. You’ll also receive and a list of 8 invasive plants to look for and report.
